So it's spring break here in BC, Canada, for two weeks....what to do with the kids?? Well their Nana and Poppy live in Alert Bay, BC. So I packed them up and off we went (the kids are still there while I'm home). Every time I go to this wonderful place I can always find something different to photograph. This time I focused on where I went and what I saw. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Gator Gardens an Ecological park filled with trails and wetlands fed by an underground spring.

I loved these double decker buses located right downtown. I look forward to seeing what their future holds for them.
But.... I also find them interesting just the way they are.

I had the chance to visit with the nicest man who gave me his 620 spool for my old vintage 1930's camera. Now this guy was a collector of many different things, his place is amazing. Oh and the camera collection was to die for! I wish it was mine and I should have taken a picture. I found his home very inspiring.

Derek {6 Month Baby Session}

Alicia's friend contacted me about purchasing a gift card for her, I was thrilled she would think of me to capture her friend's little one. I met up with Alicia and little Derek after rescheduling a couple times due to weather and seeeing as the weather wasn't going to cooperate I decide it would a good idea to photograph this little cutie inside.

Ilford Multigrade Gelaten Filter 6x6

Something you might not know about me........I love second hand stores. You never know what treasures you might find. For example: I found these multigrade filters for cheap, cheap, cheap! regular price from B&H Photo 45.95. I may never use these because I lack the equipment, but becuase they were practically giving them away I had to buy them. Just thought I would share my sweet find.

Contrast control with multigrade and variable contrast black & white photographic papers can be achieved in several ways. One of the most widely used ways is through the use multigrade or variable contrast hand filters.

A magenta filter absorbs green light and transmits blue;
A yellow filter absorbs blue light and transmits green.
In this way, high and low contrast images can be made.

Ilford produces twelve multigrade filters that are numbered 00 - 5 in 1/2 steps, with the lowest filter number corresponding to the softest contrast.

Filters are available in sets of filters 3-1/2 x 3-1/2" (8.9 x 8.9cm) and 6 x 6" (15.2 x 15.2cm ). They can be used above or below the lens and can be cut to fit the enlarger filter drawer.

Multigrade filters are very easy to use: no complicated calculations are needed when changing from one filter to another. The exposure time for filters 00 - 31/2 is the same; that for filters 4 - 5 is double.

Holiday Photos - Wiebe Family

I met up with this lovely family in December for their holiday photos taken in the clients home, actually there were two families. First family, a mom and her four cute as can be kids, the second family, mom, dad and ever so handsome son. I really enjoyed all of them and the kids were fantastic!

Snow Day

Yesterday we woke up to piles of snow and along with it a snowday! My kids, and I'm sure everyone eles kids were very happy about their snowday. I'm glad they had a chance to get out and play before all the rain. Here are couple shots from our day.

The Simmonds Family

I meet up with the Simmonds on a week day afternoon in Harrison Hot Springs. I love this little town by the water. The shoot was longer than most and I'm not sure why. Maybe because it was so nice out and sometimes I get carried away with taking pictures, but they did great! The family was was so patience and easy to take pictures of. I really enjoyed the afternoon with them.

After Photoshop

Thought I would share this after and before shot. I really liked how the subject looked, but really hated the background so like every photographer I thought hummmm what can I do to make this photo look better! With some basic photoshop skills and my little file called textures and backgrounds I looked through it and found the sky! I tried some other backgrounds but they didn't look right. With some tweaking here and there I ended up with my after picture. Very pleased with it.

Grand Parents Session {Miller Family}

Two words: Fantastic Idea!

I photographed the Miller grand children a couple years ago and was more than happy to do it again. Jackie their grandma called me with her ideas, and we went from there. We met at Suckers Creek in Hope, BC, a fantastic place for photos and a popular one at that, I really enjoy Suckers Creek, every season is beautiful.

When I saw everyone, they looked great, the outfits and the costumes! The boys with their Star Wars gear and the girls in fairy dress with wings....... very cute. I had so much fun with them, the kids had some of their own ideas which I couldn't get enough of. They were so into the photo shoot. I loved it!

I met up with the Loring's on a sunny morning down by the river, one of my favourite spots in our local town. I had the privilege of photographing the family a couple years ago and was more than happy to do it again. I love it when clients return to me, it means I've done my job.

I am very behind on this blog. I've been busy with my children, summer holidays and my photography business that I haven't had much time to update. So here it goes......

Tuesday July 20th, I'll be at our local Rec Centre teaching some children how to take better photos or what makes a better photo, I'm looking forward to this. With my check list and photo samples in hand I hope to teach them how to have fun and be creative with their photography.

My first piece of advice is Experiment - Shoot from different perspectives, up high, down low, get in close, step back for a wide angle shot, move around your subject, shoot from different sides.

One thing I always ask my self is " how can I make this look more interesting"

What a great birthday gift for Dad.......My client contacted me with a very cool idea and I was more than happy to bring these photo to life. With a beautiful day, beautiful location and cute kids who were not only great at poseing but were more than happy to get there photo taken, I really enjoyed this shoot, what more could a photographer ask for!

Photoshop

Monday night I headed into the city of Vancouver for an Adobe Photoshop CS4 and CS5 seminar, featuring Dave Cross as the instructor. I found the seminar very helpful as a self taught Photoshopper it was nice to sit back and have someone showing everyone how to use all the tools to our advantage, not to mention the great humour Dave adds into his teaching. If your a photoshop person you would have found all the jokes very funny and who can't use a good laugh while your learning.

As a NAPP member I was able to renew my membership while I was there and received 2 free training DVDs and a book of my choice. Everyone that attended the seminar received a work book and DVD related to what was taught. Money well spent thats for sure! I can't wait until they come back.

Erin - She rocks! and she rocked her dress! I loved this photo session so much, it was great fun going from location to location, and to help Erin feel comfortable we had music playing in the background......... this helps loosen up the client and who can't help but moved to the beat of a great song.

So, who should do a session like this.

Quayle, Mar, and Smith Family

When family is spread apart and the opportunity presents it's self for a family photo session weather rain or shine it's important to take that extra time for special shots of the whole family, you never know when you'll have the chance again.

This is the Quayle, Mar, and Smith family I was very proud of them for gathering everyone together in the rain. Can't tell it was raining in the photos, actually it was more of a mist......... I think.

Planet Hope - Skate Park

My first try at Tiny Planet Photography. 360 view, stitched together to make a pano, from there you can make your planet! This was a hand held shot, I recommend a tripod.

It was great to let out the artistic side!

In Front Off The Lens

I needed/wanted a new photo of myself holding my camera for my website. I knew what I wanted and the kinda of place's I wanted to go. I felt my own photo should look similar to something I would take for a client. I can't take it by my self, that be to much work, set up camera.......run and pose.......run back to see if the shot worked......not into that, plus if I wanted to have my camera in the photo I would need someone to help. I needed to find the right person, I know a lot of photographers in town and thought I'd ask Michelle Sulkye to take on the task of photographing me, I knew she would do a fine job. Together we found some great spots and ended up with fantastic photos.

All in all I had a lot fun, being the subject for a photo shoot instead the photographer. I'd do it again.

Spring Photos

Every spring and fall I like to update my children's photos. I usually photograph them at the same time, this year I wanted to photograph them separately. Friday I spent the afternoon with my son going from location to location it was great to spend the day with just him, making it fun for him and in the end he ended up with a huge jaw breaker for work well done!

Playing With The Birds

On a beautiful warm sunny Saturday, hanging out at Lightning Lakes in Manning Park. We are getting ready for lunch, out comes the Wiskey Jacks for some yummy bread. My Kids just loved placing the bread on their heads waiting for the bird to snatch it up. And what time to have the camera out and ready I love these shots and would like to share them.

I am so glad, I had the chance to be downtown in Vancouver while the Olympic were here. It was a short trip but a good one. Everyone was happy and talking to each other, I loved every moment and wish I could go back. It's true you "gotta be here". Even my kids loved the experience, the next day I asked them "what was the best part"? they said "everything"!

Torch Run Though Hope, BC

The Olympic torch is set to arrive in Hope, BC. Sunday, February 7th around 8:00-9:00 am. My self and fellow photographers from the Hope Photo Club will be lined up, with cameras ready to capture the moment the torch travels through our town. I look forward to shooting this event. Movement

While shooting some product shots for Anna's Incense, based out hope, I was drawn to the movement of the smoke coming from the incense, ever movement different from the next, almost enchanting. After completing Anna's photos, I had the time for my own shots. My idea for the completed photograph was very different from what I ended up with. I have to say- I like the end results. With some tweaking here and there it's become an artistic piece. I love it and can wait to get if printed in large format or I am thinking canvas.

We waited and waited for the rain to stop finally it happened and the sun came out. I met the Richardsons at Haig Fire Base in Hope, BC for their session. Kalea also brought one of her friends along for some photo opp's, I really enjoyed photographing them.

Cindy runs a day care down the street from me, she is so awesome with kids and kids love her. She wanted a photo for all the children she looks after. That's 15 kids all together for a quick photo shoot. It went really well, I wasn't sure at first because it was pretty cold out, but the kids didn't even notice.

as along as I get that one great photo, I am happy.

Logan Meijer - Age 6 weeks

Logan is a very cute and happy little boy. His session went really well taking about 1 hour to photograph him I was able to get him while he was awake and sleeping, it couldn't have truned out any better than that.
